Bashas’ is a family-owned and operated grocery store chain. It is one of Arizona’s largest employers with more than 100 stores across the state. Bashas’ is one of the four distinct formats of The Bashas' family of stores which also include Bashas' Diné, AJ's Fine Foods, Food City and Eddie’s Country Store.
The family struggled for many years in the retail business until the opening of the first Bashas’ store. Brothers Ike and Eddie Basha, Sr. decided to move forward with the opening to help family finances. However, this move constituted a huge gamble whose stakes were a family’s financial ruin or salvation. On the other hand, they were seeing it as a last-ditch opportunity to keep their family from ruin. In 1932, they took the risk and opened the first store. Fortunately, they became highly successful and Bashas’ has been thriving and growing since its inception.
Over the years many things have changed for the better. They acquired, developed, and expanded other grocery formats as previously mentioned. Here are some of the most interesting formats The Bashas' family of stores has to offer:
AJ’s Fine Foods stores sell gourmet and specialty foods. It offers anything from amazingly delicious chef-prepared entrees, to fresh homemade desserts and even a farmer’s market.
Food City has been proudly offering service to the Hispanic community in Arizona for over 60 years. Food City offers a great selection of traditional Mexican foods as well as items you could find in any grocery store.
The Bashas’ Diné Markets specialize in serving the needs of Navajo customers with interesting products such as Blue Bird flour for fry bread, mutton, and wool. The signs in the store are written in the native language. These stores can be found on Native American reservations throughout Arizona.
Bashas’ has a long history over 80 years and today the legacy of its founders’ vision is more than alive. The company employs more than 10,500 people and it has given back more than $100 million to the communities they serve. It is a real American dream, which came true.
