Cabela's Inc. is a subsidiary of Bass Pro Shops which is a direct marketer and specialty retailer of outdoor recreation merchandise. Cabela’s is a pioneer in the outdoor industry which specializes in selling outdoors/sports equipment. It started out as mail-order, then entered the retail market and finally became a global online outdoor outfitter. Cabela's main world headquarters is based in Sidney, Nebraska.
Cabela’s was founded by Dick Cabela in 1961 when he decided to sell fishing flies he bought from a furniture expo in Chicago. When he returned home he ran a classified ad in the newspaper saying “12 hand-tied flies for $1” which only received one response. Then he changed his marketing strategy by rewriting the ad to read "FREE Introductory offer! 5 hand-tied Flies….25c Postage… Handling". In this way, he managed to receive many orders from sportspeople all around the country. That’s how Dick and his wife started their business in their kitchen and reached their customers via direct mail. When they were posting the items, they also included their catalog to showcase the list of products.
In just a few years, their sales increased so much that they needed a much larger location for their enterprise. So, they moved their business to the basement of a furniture store and then to another 50,000 square-foot building. When the need for other employees arose, Dick’s younger brother Jim joined the company in 1963. Since then Cabela's has been thriving and the product offerings have become quite extensive.
Cabela's success has been recognized and awarded a number of times. In 2000, it was listed as one of the Top 100 Companies to Work For by Fortune magazine. In 2001, the Cabela's Catalog was ranked as the fifth most popular catalog by Catalog Age magazine. It has also been chosen as the Specialty Retailer of the Year for its online sales performance.
Cabela's still places their customers at the heart of their business planning. This philosophy was embraced by company founders Jim and Dick Cabela since the very beginning. What started on their kitchen countertop is now a huge monument of success.
