Fareway Stores, Inc. is a family owned Midwest grocery chain retailer which has over 11,000 employees in a five-state region. It operates over 122 grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
The company was founded by Paul S. Beckwith. He had broad experience working as a meat supervisor for a large grocery chain for many years. So, he had the vision of creating an atmosphere in which happy employees served satisfied customers. Others also shared Beckwith’s vision, including Fred E. Vitt who was a merchant himself. This is how the first Fareway store was opened in Boone, Iowa, in 1938. Fred E. Vitt became the store manager as well as vice president of the Fareway organization. Throughout the years, their enterprise became a huge success. Back in the time, the concept of having a self-service grocery store was considered revolutionary. The shoppers loved this new idea of picking their own groceries and putting them in their shopping carts rather than having someone doing everything for them.
Beckwith believed that the company’s values were in line with people who lived in the Midwest. He knew that these people were working hard for their families and they knew the value of a dollar.
