About Festival Foods

Festival Foods is a dominant grocery retailer chain in Wisconsin. It is a family and employee-owned company with a history over 70 years. It was founded by Paul and Jane Skogen in Onalaska, Wisconsin in 1946. They opened a 3,000 square foot store that was attached to their house using an initial investment of $500, which they borrowed. In 1975, they opened the first Skogen's Independent Grocers Alliance in a shopping center and soon their son, Dave Skogen joined the business. In just a few years, Skogen's business successfully expanded to seven stores and their son became the president of the company.

In their stores, they made a difference by offering signature items such as premium quality of lean meats. They were getting inspiration from the Old World recipes of German sausages. They called their delicious creation: Oktoberfest Brats. By the end of the 1980s, the company received the Retailer of the Year Award.

In 1990, the Skogen family was quick to notice the shifting trends in the grocery industry. They observed the customers’ buying habits and changed the format of the Festival Foods stores. Soon enough, they introduced something which their customers absolutely loved: Ribs on a Stick. These were made of marinated boneless pork loins which were cooked on skewers.

Festival Foods also partakes in fun and social events. For example, it sponsors spectacular fireworks shows every year. In 1999, in front of one of their stores, they featured the largest shopping cart in the world which was 12.5 feet high and 18 long.

In the new millennium, Festival Foods proudly adopted the ‘Boomerang Principle’ by focusing on its customers’ needs and demands, which eventually brings them back to the store. For this reason, it’s not surprising that in 2005, Mark Skogen received the Wisconsin Grocer of the Year award. By 2014, Festival Foods hired over 5,000 employees. Festival Foods has some private label brands which are supplied by SuperValu. Festival Foods is a company which is committed to providing good quality food and exceptional service for many years to come.
