About Food Lion

Food Lion, LLC. is a grocery retail chain. It was founded in 1957 under the name of Food Town in Ketner Center. Interestingly, the funds to open this store was raised by going through a phone book and asking for investments. After its successful opening, it became one of the largest supermarkets in the area with a sales floor of more than 15,000 square feet. Ralph Ketner, who is one of the founders, describes the first 10 years of Food Lion as research and development.

Food Lion is headquartered in Salisbury, North Carolina. It is owned by Ahold Delhaize since its acquisition by the Delhaize Group in 1974. Between the years 1968-1980, its sales grew from $8.5 million to $543 million. This rapid growth made it the “Fastest growing supermarket chain in America” according to Forbes’ magazine. Later in 1983, it was rebranded to Food Lion and it reached $1 billion in sales. By 1988, many Food Lion investors had already become millionaires.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Food lion also experimented with larger and small store formats. Today, it has more than 1000 stores and around 63,000 employees in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states which serve approximately 10 million customers per week. Each store offers over 28,000 products, with over 7,000 own-brand products.
