About Lidl

Lidl is a German discount grocery retailer based in Neckarsulm, Germany. It was founded by Josef Schwarz and belongs to Dieter Schwarz, who also owns Handelshof and hypermarket Kaufland.

In 1973, the first Lidl store was opened in a city called Ludwigshafen. It had only 3 employees and was offering around 500 products. This small store was the beginning of Lidl’s global expansion. Around 30 stores were opened in the same decade. During the 1980s, 300 stores opened in Germany and the number of employees and the product offerings was increased gradually. During the 1990s, Lidl started opening stores outside Germany. The first store to be opened outside Germany was in France. The first store in the UK was opened in 1994. Then, Lidl rapidly expanded to many other European countries. Today, there are over 10,500 stores in 29 countries. Finally, in 2017, Lidl entered the United States as well.

Lidl stores focus on working with local suppliers and regional farms in order to offer quality products at affordable prices. 90% of all the items offered in Lidl stores are Lidl private label products. These products have strict requirements and they undergo testing in terms of quality and taste.

In order to offer a great shopping experience, Lidl hires expert product curators to create the best product listings and an intuitive store layout. This way going through the aisles is simple because you can discover amazing products at a glance. Without any hassle, you can enjoy the exclusive selection of items in each category. Also, your shopping will be faster because you won't have to go through products you don’t want to buy to find what exactly you are looking for. Your shopping will be efficient - you will save time and money at the same time. Alongside the groceries, you can find anything from home essentials & decor to small appliances, kitchenware, apparel, toys, and power tools & gardening supplies, etc.

One reason Lidl is cheaper than its competitors is that it adopts the ‘Bring Your Bag’ policy and display its products in custom boxes, which cuts down the running costs. Thanks to such strategies lower running costs mean lower prices for the customers and of course, it’s much better for the environment.
