About Piggly Wiggly

Piggly Wiggly is a grocery chain retailer which mainly operates in the South and Midwest. The company is privately owned and operated. It is known as the first true self-service grocery store in America, which has a history over 90 years.

Back in the day self-service grocery shopping did not exist. Customers weren’t allowed to gather their own groceries. Instead, they would give a list to clerks who would go around the store and gather their goods for them. Clarence Sauders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly, thought this procedure was time-consuming for both the clerks and the customers. Also, he realized that it wasn't cost-effective to attend to every customer one by one. So, he revolutionalized the grocery industry when he came up with the idea that would allow customers to serve themselves.

He opened the first Piggly Wiggly store in 1916, in Memphis. He gave an unusual name to his store in order to arouse curiosity and to let the customers know that this store wasn’t like any other store. Due to the fact that self-service stores weren’t commonplace, many of his competitors were skeptical about it. They were anticipating that this method would fail. However, the opposite happened. Getting rid of this method allowed him to actually make the prices cheaper and the store became very popular among the shoppers because of that. Many innovations Piggly Wiggly introduced are still being used by shoppers across the country.

Some of them include:

  • Checkout stands
  • Price tags
  • Refrigerated cases to keep fruits & vegetables fresh
  • Shopping carts

Consequently, the self-service format influenced many other stores during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, there are over 530 Piggly Wiggly stores in 17 states. In 2010, Piggly Wiggly was listed as the 10th largest privately-held company in the US by Forbes magazine.
