About Price Chopper

Price Chopper, a subsidiary of The Golub Corporation, is a supermarket chain which operates in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.

In 1932, brothers Bill and Ben Golub came up with a revolutionary merchandising concept: a large self-service supermarket. With that idea in mind, the first store was opened in New York’s Capital District as Central Market which later rebranded to Price Chopper in 1973. This was one of the first supermarkets in the United States.

Throughout the years, the company experimented with new formats. For example in 2012, its first small-format store was opened which was called Price Chopper Limited. This store was about a third of the size of a typical Price Chopper supermarket. The idea behind this “Limited” store was to offer their customers an edited selection of Price Chopper's most popular offerings; a bakery, deli, seafood, and a café, etc.

In 2013, The Golub Corporation decided to invest $10 million for the relaunch an existing store as Market Bistro by Price Chopper. The new store had amazing features such as a pizza counter, cooking classes, and patios.

In 2014, the company made announcements regarding their plans to rebrand 135 Price Chopper supermarkets as Market 32. The conversions were scheduled to complete in several years. This $300 million investment would expand the food service options, enhance the product offerings and improve customer service. The number 32 in the name references the year which the company was founded.

Today, the company is run by the founding Golub family, which owns about 45% of the regional grocery chain and its employees own slightly more than 45%. It is headquartered in Downtown Schenectady, New York. New York is its largest market and there are over 135 Price Chopper supermarkets in the northeastern US.
