About Shaw's

Shaw's is a leading grocery retailer which is a subsidiary of Albertsons. It is one of the oldest continuously-operated supermarkets in America.

Shaw’s has a story over 150 years. In 1860, George Shaw opened a small grocery store in Portland, Maine. This store was offering 100 items and most of them were not being sold by local farmers, which was an advantage. In 1919, Mainer Maynard Davis came to Massachusetts. He established a number of small grocery stores called Brockton Public Markets (BMP). Later, he purchased George Shaw’s Company and made it a subsidiary of BPM, but he decided to operate them independently.

Throughout the years, innovative measures were taken in order to keep up with other grocery stores across the country. In the 1940s, Shaw’s and BPM stores were switched to self-service format and introduced cash registers, etc. They also managed to stay competitive with large grocery chains by opening new stores in Portland, Maine, Brockton and Massachusetts. During the 1960s and 1970s, the company experienced rapid growth and expanded to new locations. In 1979, George Shaw's Company merged with BPM to officially form Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.

During the 1990s, Shaw’s Supermarkets became very successful and a sister company called Star Market was launched. Its stores were opened mainly in the Boston area, under the same management.

Thanks to the years of efforts of the founders, today Shaw’s Supermarkets became a household name for many American families. It always strives to offer high-quality, low-cost products and provide excellent service to its customers.
